January 6, 2007I will be installing 2inch drop coils on my 66c-10. I dont know if it is better to have the engine out for the install or in to help compress the new springs. Do I need a spring compressor to take the front springs out? Is there a step by step guide out there? The rear seams strait foreward but the front looks a bit tricky. I am also going to replace the ball joints, tierod ends etc..at the same time. If anyone can help or point me to a step by step manual of some kind that would be great! Thanks. Old Iron rules!!

January 27, 2007I don't know where to send you for a step by step guide, but i can help you with the process. First, rent or buy the special tools needed which are a spring compressor and a ball joint seperater. Start by jacking the front of the truck up and placing it on jack stands under the frame rail not the suspension, allowing the suspension to droop all the way down. Next, remove the shock. Now you should be able to get to that spring with the spring compressor. Follow the directions that came with the tool and you should be able to release the tension between the spring and the lower control arm. If you can't get your spring compressor on your spring at this point, you may have to separate the lower ball joint from the spindle to allow more droop. Be very careful here! The spring can fly out and seriously hurt or kill you or a bystander! Put a floor jack under the lower control arm and bring it up just slightly off of full droop. Take the ball joint separater you rented or bought and separate the lower control arm from the spindle. Next, lift the spindle and upper control arm up as high as it will go and tie it off out of the way. Now lower the floor jack very slowly and only enough for you to get that spring compressor on that spring! Once you have the spring compressor on the spring and you have it compressed remove the tab holding the spring in the spring pocket of the control arm and lower your floor jack all the way. Your compressed spring should fall out. Replace your ball joints and any other parts and reassemble in reverse order. Good luck!
January 28, 2007Very good step by step list . remember safety first with those springs they have killed people. If you are not sure go to you local front end shop and ask them what they use and how they do it.
February 27, 2007Thanks for the help! I have the coils for the front but the rear 2in drop coils are on back order! Do you know if I will have to shim the top control arm with a 2 inch drop? I have heard that I will and that I wont have to. Thanks again.
